A robotic touch

I am not against retouching pictures and my opinion i that it is needed to make it more like reality and or giving it more of a beautiful appeal (hey you never get as close as you do with a lens and discover things invisible to the eye), but if you go too far it looks unreal and inhuman (which can be an effect, if you WANT it to look like a machine). A photograph is not reality and shouldn't be but it shouldn't be robotic in my opinion. I think that is why older pictures often (not always) appear more beautiful, they left more human features when editing. Luckily there are talented retouchers that gets it even today so don't get me wrong.

My friend Kristy Lee said something interesting: That a lot of pictures today reminds her of Uncanny Valley, an hypothesis by a japanese roboticist (a proffession which is very new to me) Masahiro Mori.

Mori's hypothesis states that as a robot is made more humanlike in its appearance and motion, the emotional response from a human being to the robot will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a point is reached beyond which the response quickly becomes that of strong repulsion. However, as the appearance and motion continue to become less distinguishable from a human being, the emotional response becomes positive once more and approaches human-to-human empathy levels.

This area of repulsive response aroused by a robot with appearance and motion between a "barely-human" and "fully human" entity is called the uncanny valley. The name captures the idea that a robot which is "almost human" will seem overly "strange" to a human being and thus will fail to evoke the empathetic response required for productive human-robot interaction.

I couldn't agree more.

4/4 Marguerite Duras

Today feels like a good reason to post two of my favourite pictures of one of my favourite authors. Marguerite Duras (author of the lover, Hiroshima mon amour etc) We share the same birthday date (Today!) She was born on 4 april 1914 and lived until 3 mars 1996. I love these two pictures so much, she was radiant throughout. The first is by unknown and the second of Richard Avedon, the one and only. Now I am off for cookies and cake!

Doll macabre - Hans Bellmer

Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) was a french-german surrealist mostly known of his awkward doll-sculptures which he simply called the doll in the 1930s. Personally I am more drawn to his sketches which I got the chance to look more closely at his exhibition in paris some years ago. They have such detail and almost a kaleidoscope movement to them. If you want to look him up I suggest a museum, a book at the library or a bookstore for a clearer view of this artist than the little selection google provides.
